Three ways a cancellation reaches into your future

1. Re-entry bans. In certain circumstances, a cancellation can trigger a re-entry ban — commonly three years — during which you cannot be granted many temporary visas to return to Australia. This is one of the least-understood consequences and one of the most disruptive.
2. The onshore application bar. If your visa is cancelled while you’re in Australia and you’re left without a substantive visa, the section 48 bar generally prevents you from lodging most further visa applications onshore. In practical terms, that can force you to depart before you can apply again — with all the family, work and financial disruption that involves.
3. The character bar. A section 501 character cancellation is the most far-reaching. Because most substantive visas require you not to have had a visa cancelled on character grounds, a section 501 cancellation can operate as a near-permanent bar to future grants, other than a protection or criminal justice visa. It doesn’t just affect the next application — it can affect all of them.

   If you treat a cancellation as a single problem — “save this visa” — you may accept an outcome that’s manageable today but costly for a decade. The better approach weighs the review options against the long-term bars, so the decision you make now protects the pathway you’ll want later.
